History of Stone Bros Plumbing
Back where it all started
Our plumbing history began back in the early 1900’s with Steven and Daniel's great grandfather Robert and great uncle George Stone beginning their careers as apprentice plumbers in Williamstown, Victoria. George was the first person to receive the Gold Medal award from the Master Plumbers and Mechanical Services Association of Australia in 1908. An award that was started in 1905 when the Association agreed to donate a gold medal to the Working Men’s College to the highest achieving student who met the required conditions. The standard was set so high that it was not until 1908 that the award was first given out. Robert was President of the Association between 1913/14 while George became President of the Ballarat Branch of the Association on several occasions,he was also Victorian State President for several terms. George was actively involved with the Association for more than 46 years. He was inducted as a Life Member and has an Educational Award named in his honour.

1920s–1930s
The partnership dissolved in the 1920s with Robert moving his family from Williamstown to Caldwell, NSW. In 1930 Robert and his wife Margaret and their four sons Robert (Bob), John (Jack), George and Stewert moved to Tarrawingee, Victoria to farm. As the boys got older, two of them went into plumbing with different companies. Jack got his apprenticeship working for Rosses Plumbing — he had to travel to Benalla in his own time to do his apprentice schooling — and Stewert completed his apprenticeship with JE Harrison.
1940s
After World War 2 and the boys returned home to Wangaratta, in 1946 Bob, John (Jack) and Stewert started up Stone Bros. as second generation plumbers, working from Jack's home in George Street. They joined the Master Plumbers Association in 1948, a membership the business has continued for over 70 years.
1950s
In the early 1950s Stone Bros moved the location of the business from George Street to Rowan Street near the underpass.
1960s
Stewert left the business leaving Bob and Jack to carry on together. In 1969 Jack's son Russell started his plumbing apprenticeship and worked alongside his father. Above: Jack (second on the left) and a young Russell (third on the left) at the Stone Bros display at the Wangaratta Show in the early 1960s.
1970s
In 1974 Bob retired leaving Jack to take over the reins of the business, by this time his son Russell was working for him as the 3rd generation to take up the trade. In that same year they moved the business from Rowan St to 9 Bullivant Street, Wangaratta where the shop is located today.
1980s
In 1981 the trading name was changed from Stone Bros Pty Ltd to JT Stone and Son Pty Ltd. About this time Russell took over the day to day running of the business from Jack, even though Jack was involved with the business until his death in 1996. Stewert's son David started his plumbing apprenticeship with Jack and Russell in the early 1980s and has worked for the Company now for over 35 years. Russell's eldest son Steven in December 1989 continued the family tradition starting his apprenticeship with the company.
1990s–2010s
In 1991 Russell put on another apprentice — his second son Craig — who completed his apprenticeship before heading overseas for a period and living in Melbourne, before returning to Wangaratta with his family and returning to the plumbing business. Daniel took up his apprenticeship in 1997 and once that was completed he travelled and worked overseas too before returning to plumbing in Wangaratta in 2008. This saw Russell working with all three of his sons for a number of years. During this time some extensions were also made to the workshop in Bullivant St, with the addition of an office area and then a few years later extra workshop area was added to the existing shed.
2017
In February 2017 Steven and Daniel together purchased the family business from their parents and renamed the business back to Stone Bros Plumbing Pty. Ltd. Steven has over 35 years experience behind him and Daniel brings over 25 years and they are dedicated to delivering a quality service.
2019
Daniel, Russell, Steven, Noah. In November 2019 Steven's son Noah started his apprenticeship, after finishing Year 12. Noah has become the 5th generation of Stone plumber in the locally owned and operated business. Continuing on with over 100 years of service and family tradition.
